The Lonely Moor and Jig

Susan’s last publication in 1960 was Two Pieces for Violin and Viola – The Lonely Moor and Jig. The undated manuscript of The Lonely Moor shows that the piece is dedicated to J.L.D. J.L.D. was John De Lanoy Dunk (1877–1965), Susan’s elder brother. John was an amateur violinist and composer and had taken over running the family building firm in Folkestone from their father. John also published books on tonality and mathematical aspects of music.

Shirley Turner and Peter Mallinson play these pieces brilliantly on their album A Musical Soirée (Meridian). This album also features wonderful pieces by York Bowen (1884–1961) and Harry Waldo Warner (1874–1945). Susan kept an autograph book which includes many significant people from the world of music in the first quarter of the 20th century. In it are autographs by York and Harry, who each wrote a few bars of their music for her with their signatures. She must have known them well and it is delightful that the three of them are reunited in this wonderful album.
